The third week of July is Rural Road Safety Awareness Week (RRSAW). GHSA's report, funded by State Farm, reveals alarming statistics: There were 85,002 fatalities on rural roads from 2016 to 2020, with a 62% higher risk of dying in a crash compared to urban roads. This high rate is driven by factors such as a lack of safety resources, simpler infrastructure, and risky driver behaviors like impaired driving and speeding. Let's work together to promote safer rural roads. Learn more about our findings and recommendations to improve safety at https://lnkd.in/eXPDTi6B. #RRSAW #RoadSafety #GHSA

The New York Times reporter Matt Richtel is teaching his teenage son to drive in a Tesla and shared his thoughts on novice drivers and vehicle technology in a story published earlier this week. I encourage Matt and all parents of novice drivers to learn all they can about the technology in their vehicles. And point them to the October 2023 Governors Highway Safety Association (GHSA) teen driving report (available at https://lnkd.in/eZ6HeVa4) I co-authored with former NHTSA official, Dr. Jim Hedlund. The report confirms we've made tremendous progress in reducing teen driver fatalities over the past 20 years and identifies the policies and programs -- including advances in vehicle safety technology -- responsible for those gains and makes recommendations for building on that success. As vehicle technology continues to evolve, ensuring that our youngest and riskiest drivers understand and use it correctly is critical. That understanding should include how the technology functions, its limitations and the conditions or situation that it was or wasn’t designed for. Inaccuracies can lead to driver overreliance and/or overestimation of the technology’s capabilities, which can be particularly deadly for young drivers . We also know that driver's don’t have a good understanding of the current advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) in their vehicles (e.g., lane-keeping assist, automatic emergency braking) and, as a result, are not reaping their benefits. Introducing teens to today’s ADAS, including opportunities to try them out in a controlled setting, can help bridge the knowledge gap and bolster use and safety. This is critical because teens may assume that a Level 2 or 3 automated vehicle, including a Tesla, can drive itself without any attention from the driver, which is simply not the case. This lack of understanding has been the cause of many crashes. This generation of young drivers is more likely than their parents to embrace technology, but it’s vital they’re provided accurate information about what exists today and how it works, so their interaction with it is safe and appropriate. #teendriversafety #teendriving #vehicletechnology #advanceddriverassistancesystems #automatedvehicles https://lnkd.in/dsHFRmcJ
