About us
Since 1918, the National Slag Association (NSA) has promoted the use of Blast Furnace and Steel Furnace Slag. Blast Furnace Slag has been called the "All Purpose Aggregate" as it can be used in all construction applications as either a normal weight or lightweight (expanded or pelletized) aggregate depending on how it was formed and processed. Blast Furnace Slag is also quickly quenched by water or air to Granulated Blast Furnace Slag.

The SMA Environment Committee is gathering in D.C. this week to talk about how member steel mills are making their operations — already among the cleanest in the world — cleaner and more efficient. Their companies are investing in new steelmaking capacity, creating jobs and strengthening communities while dealing with the challenges of new and forthcoming environmental regulations. Chairman Bill Bougher of Steel Dynamics, Inc is presiding over a meeting that will feature guest speakers from US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the Global Steel Climate Council and the National Slag Association among others.

EAF slag products utilized for construction are building products not meant to be ingested. Nevertheless, to demonstrate the fact that these products are unlikely to pose a health risk when used as intended, the National Slag Association conducted a study incorporating techniques such as physiologically based pharmacokinetic (PBPK) modeling utilized by the pharmaceutical industry in conjunction with animal studies to investigate the effects of these products on mammals if ingested. The findings of this state-of-the-art research project have been published in Risk Analysis an International Journal that serves as the official publication of the Society for Risk Analysis. The article titled Probabilistic risk assessment of residential exposure to electric arc furnace steel slag using Bayesian model of relative bioavailability and PBPK modeling of manganese is freely available to the public and can be found in the April 2024 issue of Risk Analysis. It can also be obtained electronically via the link in the comments! 👇
