This revised draft guidance supports the critical role of the regulated industry in ensuring consumers have access to accurate and science-based information. FDA Commissioner Dr. Robert M. Califf emphasized, “The growing spread of rumors about science and medicine continues to put patients and consumers at risk. We remain steadfast in our commitment to address this public health concern and continue to support and encourage all parties in the public health ecosystem to take an active role.” This initiative is vital in today’s digital age where misinformation can spread rapidly, potentially leading to harmful medical decisions. Q1: Can you tell us about the recent advancements in bioorthogonal chemistry and how your lab is using this technology to study cell surface sugars? Dr. Bertozzi: Our lab synthesizes chemical tools to study glycans, which play roles in diseases like cancer and COVID-19. This helps develop targeted therapies and diagnostics. Q2: Your team has developed a fast point-of-care test for tuberculosis (TB). Can you explain the significance of this innovation? Dr. Bertozzi: Yes, this is one of our exciting recent developments. We created a rapid point-of-care test for tuberculosis, which is crucial for early detection and effective treatment, especially in resource-limited settings. TB remains a significant health challenge globally, and early diagnosis is key to controlling the spread and improving patient outcomes. Our test is designed to be fast and accurate, addressing a critical need in TB management. Q3: You’ve found a fascinating connection between a rare disease and cancer. How did this discovery come about, and what does it mean for future research? Dr. Bertozzi: This discovery emerged from our studies on the sugar coatings of cells. By investigating these glycans, we identified links between certain rare diseases and cancer. This connection provides deeper insights into disease mechanisms and potential therapeutic targets. It underscores the importance of interdisciplinary approaches in biomedical science, as it highlights how studying one area can lead to breakthroughs in another. Q4: Your work has also contributed to breakthroughs in cancer immunotherapy. Can you elaborate on these advancements? Dr. Bertozzi: Our research extends beyond diagnostics to include the development of new cancer immunotherapies.
