Sen. J.D. Vance, R-Ohio, who has pursued the elimination of tax exemptions for large corporate mergers and the repeal of energy subsidies tied to the Inflation Reduction Act, has been selected by former President Trump to join the Republican ticket as the nominee for vice president. In an announcement on Truth Social July 15 to coincide with the opening of the 2024 Republican National Convention in Milwaukee, Trump said that Vance’s mixture of working-class roots and experience as a venture capitalist factored into his decision. “J.D. has had a very successful business career in technology and finance, and now, during the campaign, will be strongly focused on the people he fought so brilliantly for, the American workers and farmers in Pennsylvania, Michigan, Wisconsin, Ohio, Minnesota, and far beyond,” Trump said. A think tank’s bid to improve tax policy education for high school students has drawn derision from a group of notable academics. In an open letter to educators last month, 75 tax policy professors accused the Tax Foundation's TaxEDU materials of lacking objectivity and presenting right-wing tax policy viewpoints as fact. The professors compared TaxEDU’s presentation of various topics with other tax education materials that they say offer more room for ideological diversity. It's been a few years since I felt excited to write something, but when the Supreme Court published its opinion in Moore, I knew I wanted to take a closer look at the dissenting opinion of Justices Thomas and Gorsuch. While this case didn't ultimately end up being about "realization," there's still plenty we can learn about how these two justices feel about the issue, and how a future fight over the realization requirement might play out. It published today in Tax Notes; I hope you find it helpful. https://lnkd.in/gr9CxJyX

"Two Supreme Court decisions released within days of each other in late June and early July are likely to usher in a new wave of litigation and reshape the way that tax regulations and guidance are challenged. "The full ramifications will require more wrangling in the lower courts over questions like the limits of an express delegation of authority from Congress and the application of the Court’s analysis to the Anti-Injunction Act." Perspective: Marie Sapirie analyzes the impact of the recent Supreme Court decisions in Loper Bright and Corner Post on tax.
