💡 Friday reading: Catalytic environments to drive progress in digital mental health research 💡 Wellcome Trust and Science Practice have published their deep dive into existing and emerging structures for accelerating digital mental health research. The report explores catalysts across 21 countries, including: University R&D centres, University-healthcare partnerships, Multi-partner implementation projects, Independent R&D centres, Accelerators and incubators - including ZINC. The findings cover recommendations for funders looking to unblock and accelerate progress in the digital mental health field in three areas: 1️⃣ Fund a venture-building programme focused on digital mental health. The model presents significant potential, yet seems under-explored in digital mental health. However, creating new companies won’t alone be enough to enable the field to reach its potential, so they also propose that funders... 2️⃣ Drive change in digital mental health markets and healthcare systems. This would require additional scoping to understand country-specific barriers to commercial viability and integration with healthcare systems, and cross-sector coordination to address systemic challenges. 3️⃣ Create new or modified grantmaking programmes. Funders should consider how existing offerings help vs. hinder digital mental health research translation (i.e., prioritise impact metrics, speed up funding allocations, have designated pots for implementation-specific activities). 📣 New report out now: Catalytic environments to drive progress in digital mental health research https://lnkd.in/dsNjgev7 Wellcome Trust commissioned our team – Richard Batty, Ana Florescu, Emily Gulliksen, Andrea Wong – to explore existing and emerging structures (catalysts) for accelerating digital mental health research. We found 93 example catalysts across 21 countries, some focused specifically on mental health, others on digital health more broadly. We grouped these into 5 types: 🏫 University R&D centres such as E-Health Research Center (EHRC) in India 🏥 University-healthcare partnerships such as MindSpot in Australia, Mental Health Research for Innovation Centre (M-RIC) and MindTech in the UK and the Eindhoven MedTech Innovation Center (e/MTIC) in the Netherlands 🤝 Multi-partner implementation projects 🧑🏻💻 Independent R&D centres including Orygen Digital in Australia ⏩ Accelerators such as HealthTech Hub Africa in Rwanda and DigitalHealth.London in the UK 🏗️ Venture builders such as ZINC and Deep Science Ventures in the UK. Strengths and limitations of each type are detailed in the report, as well as the extent to which they address specific translation barriers including: constraints within the academic environment, finding a sustainable business model, building relevant evidence, linking up with healthcare systems, and addressing user needs, priorities, and realities. We make three recommendations for funders looking to unblock and accelerate progress in the digital mental health field: 1️⃣ Fund a venture-building programme focused on digital mental health. The model presents significant potential, yet seems under-explored in digital mental health. However, creating new companies won’t alone be enough to enable the field to reach its potential, so we also propose that funders... This research wouldn't have been possible without: * The commissioning team at Wellcome Trust: Lynsey Bilsland, Caitlín Hastings, Nicola Haines, Elena Netsi, and Dhriti Sarkar * Our expert advisors: Prof. Nick Allen, Prof. Sandra Bucci, Dr. Milan Cvitkovic, Dr. Seema Mehrotra, and Dr. Victor Ugo * Our governance group members: Huguette Diakabana, Asmae Doukani, Sara Nelson, Manvi Tiwari, and Tanya Marwaha * Those who contributed to this research as interviewees or reviewers. Thank you all for your knowledge, experience, and generosity.
