World Elder Abuse Awareness Day is held on June 15th and is celebrated from Mother’s Day through Father’s Day (this year, May 12 - June 16, 2024). North Carolina is an any-person state. Therefore, any person who suspects that an older adult is being abused, neglected, or financially exploited must make a report to local law enforcement and/or Adult Protective Services. The Credit Union is committed to educating its employees and members on the topics concerning older adults. Ask an SECU employee for fliers/brochures that include information on issues such as: • Potential red flags: recognizing abuse, neglect, and financial exploitation • Common Scams • Identity Theft • Fiduciary Resource Guides (Guides for Guardians, Agents under Power of Attorney, Representative Payees, etc.) In addition, establishing a comprehensive estate plan and choosing a trusted person to assist with handling your finances before any mental or physical incapacity can be instrumental in preventing financial exploitation. Executing a power of attorney document is a proactive estate planning tool used to designate a person as your agent and outline appropriate powers granted to them. For information regarding ways to help prevent financial exploitation and meet your estate planning needs, please contact your local branch and ask to speak with a Trust Representative. Trust services provided by Members Trust Company, a federal thrift regulated by the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency. Trust and Investment products are not federally insured, are not obligations of or guaranteed by the credit union or any affiliated entity, involve investment risks, including the possible loss of principal.
