Our latest article delves into an important question facing many veterans transitioning into the business world: Should veterans pursue an MBA? This is a crucial decision, one that goes beyond mere academic qualifications and touches upon the alignment of education with personal and professional goals. "In the debate over the value of an MBA for veterans, it's essential to approach the decision with a holistic view. My experiences have shown me that veterans can and do succeed with or without an MBA. The key lies in aligning the MBA with your personal and professional aspirations. While the MBA journey can offer profound insights and broaden your perspective, it's not the only path to success. It's about understanding how this academic pursuit fits into your larger career narrative, and whether it complements the unique skills and experiences you've already acquired. This decision requires thoughtful consideration of both the potential benefits and the alternatives." Join us as we explore this topic, providing insights and perspectives that can help guide veterans in making an informed decision about their educational and professional paths. Paul W Swaney III this article was a great read and I appreciate your insights into this important question. I'm an active duty pilot with 6 yrs left on my commitment -- I'm at a point in my career where I have the flexibility to consider an online Masters degree (and I want to take advantage of the tuition assistance provided for active duty members.) I'm also planning on getting a full-time MBA after my military service. I'm ultimately interested in the Consulting and/or PE sectors. Do you have any thoughts on what kind of Masters degree might be beneficial as I prepare for a pivot into those industries? (In addition to an MBA) Brendan Aronson, I’d love to hear your thoughts as well!

An MBA is neither necessary nor sufficient to be 'successful' in business. They can be helpful in building a network, and for transitioning vets, they can buy some time and space to figure out what you want to do with your life. That said, there are better ways to learn business (ie working at Swaney Group 😁)

This is a huge decision to make. Properly weighing your options and beginning with the end in mind is essential. I find understanding the process is critical, and ultimately, I have found that gaining real world experience is most important, so long as it is the right experience that aligns with your desired trajectory. This article highlights some factors some may not consider, and I hope this helps serve as a guide for our transitioning vets.

Paul, this is a really thought provoking and insightful discussion. The decision to go to B-school should not be done mindlessly, it should be done deliberately. I often feel as though Veterans feel required to obtain an MBA, I know I did, but in reality I leveraged my time in service far more than the MBA. Great article!

MBAs are increasingly perceived as a one-size-fits all, but some critical thought should be given to its necessity and timing. I think this article offers a very fair look at that aspect, great read!

I would encourage transitioning veterans to check out degrees like MSc Social Innovation and Entrepreneurship and Executive MSc Social Business and Entrepreneurship as potential alternatives to the MBA. Looking back, I would have liked to weigh these options.
