🌐 Next episode of our international voices series. Here, Jean, the mother of a 19-year-old with a rare genetic condition called GAND, which causes delays in speech, cognition, and gross and fine motor skills, shares her unique insights on integrating multidisciplinary therapies within the school system, transitioning to adult healthcare, and the vital support family caregivers need. Her experiences shed light on the complex navigation through childhood and adult disability services and underscore the importance of continuous support systems. Jean’s story is a call to action for improving healthcare policies and caregiver resources. Join us to discuss these critical issues at #IAACD2025 #EACD2025. Let’s drive change together for families dealing with childhood-onset disabilities. #ChildhoodDisability #HealthcareTransition #FamilyCaregivers https://lnkd.in/eFcQN_hg

𝐀 𝐅𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐡 𝐓𝐚𝐤𝐞 𝐨𝐧 𝐒𝐜𝐡𝐚𝐚𝐟-𝐘𝐚𝐧𝐠 𝐒𝐲𝐧𝐝𝐫𝐨𝐦𝐞 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐌𝐀𝐆𝐄𝐋2 | 🗞🔔 Together with my fantastic mentor Prof Christian Schaaf, I had the pleasure of writing a review on the Prader-Willi syndrome gene 𝘔𝘈𝘎𝘌𝘓2 and Schaaf-Yang syndrome (SYS). SYS is a highly complex neurodevelopmental disorder characterised by autism, joint contractures, and hypothalamic dysfunction. By studying SYS from basic, translational and clinical perspectives, we can learn how the tiniest variant in the human genome (often just 1 base duplication in 𝘔𝘈𝘎𝘌𝘓2) can fundamentally disrupt brain and body homeostasis. You can read the review in #DMCN: https://lnkd.in/ev4RcJp7 👨🏼💻 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐰𝐫𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐣𝐨𝐮𝐫𝐧𝐞𝐲 𝑩𝒚 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝒘𝒂𝒚: Writing a review paper is far more time-consuming than I had anticipated. The real challenge lies in constructing a new, concise narrative from existing literature without simply copying all information. Deciding what is important and what is not is a skill I had to learn the hard way in my first years as a medical student. 𝑩𝒖𝒕: Reviewing literature was also deeply satisfying. It allowed me to capture my unique snapshot of a small part of the current scientific landscape. Reading how the field evolved from the discovery of the 𝘔𝘈𝘎𝘌𝘓2 gene to a range of potential therapeutics for SYS gave me a new sense of being part of a greater scientific endeavour. I cannot wait to reconnect with patients, their families, and other researchers in the field at this year's Foundation For Prader-Willi Research symposium. After all, people with lived experience will always be more inspiring than papers. 😊 #MAGEL2 #SYS #PWS

Dr. Peter Rosenbaum, a renowned developmental pediatrician from McMaster University in Canada, shares his expertise as part of the International Voices project to promote the 4th Triennial Meeting of the International Alliance of Academies of Childhood Disability (IAACD) and the 37th Annual Meeting of the European Academy Of Childhood Disability (EACD). This event will take place in the beautiful city of Heidelberg, Germany, from June 24th to 28th, 2025. In his interview, Dr. Rosenbaum critically addresses the limitations of predicting disability outcomes using modern assessment methods, highlighting the often inaccurate probabilities when applied to individual cases. He strongly advocates for a shift towards focusing on adaptation rather than curing, emphasizing the significant role of aids and adaptations in enhancing functionality and improving the quality of life for children with disabilities. This perspective is crucial as we rethink our approach to supporting adaptive measures in therapeutic practices, ensuring that children with disabilities can lead more empowered and fulfilled lives. Join us in Heidelberg to explore these transformative ideas and more at this key international gathering. #ChildhoodDisability #HealthcareInnovation #AdaptiveSolutions #IAACD2025 #EACD2025 🎥 https://lnkd.in/eZD-vu72
