ALLEN PARK -- The Detroit Lions have become one of the hottest tickets in the league. Now as they close in on their first division title in 30 years -- and just hours before they could officially clinch their spot in the postseason -- they’re using the moment to raise ticket prices by an average of 36%.

Some sections will be unaffected, while others could see increases by as much as 80%, even when accounting for the extra home game that will be played at Ford Field. (Barring one of those games being sent abroad, anyway.)

The increases come after years of keeping prices steady. The Lions were working through some deep issues back then, and also went through the COVID years. As a result, their ticket prices became some of the cheapest in the league.

Now those days are very much over. They won eight of their final 10 games down the stretch last year, and enjoyed the biggest attendance spike in the league.

This year, they’ve averaged 65,081 fans per game at the 65,000-seat capacity Ford Field -- an attendance rate of 100.9%. The stadium record is 98.7%, which occurred back in 2017, the last time they were coming off a playoff appearance.

Detroit has now sold out Ford Field for every game this season, while drawing huge TV numbers. Factor in the small capacity of Ford Field and all the wins on the field -- they can match the team record with two victories in the final weeks of the season -- and you can understand why the team is finally raising prices.

But the price hikes are substantial, and it’ll be interesting to hear from the Lions about their process. They did not immediately respond to a request for comment on Monday, and team president Rod Wood did not pen a letter to season ticket holders about the prices, as he has most years when tickets have gone on sale.
