🏳️🌈🏳️⚧️ Last night we were able to host the amazing Alexander Gabbutt from LGBT Great delivering insights and key actions from their incredible report 'Seeing is Believing: The Power of Role Models'. 🏳️⚧️🏳️🌈 We titled the evening "Reflect. Empower. Unite. An Evening with ISE Partners." in line with the title of NYC Pride this year - "Reflect. Empower. Unite." The title was chosen to get people thinking about how we can create a space and history we can be proud of. In a time of all the legal, moral, and economic challenges that continue to face the LGBTQIA+ community in 2024, it gives us the chance to REFLECT upon the effect of the Stonewall riots 55 years ago; to embrace and feel EMPOWERED with how different times are now and how far we have managed to come thanks to the hard work of the LGBTQIA+ community; and how now is a time more than ever to learn from our mistakes and UNITE in advocating for all members of the LGBTQIA+ community equally. To me, this connects so strongly back to us all as individuals, and the firms that we work in - how we can all REFLECT upon what we are doing and have done to uplift the LGBTQIA+ community; how by then we can feel EMPOWERED to bring action that can build a limitless future - free from discrimination; and how we then UNITE like at this event, to inspire, educate, and celebrate our diverse LGBTQIA+ community to bring Pride not only in June, but all through the year. The theme of Pride in London this year is #weareeverywhere which linked so nicely into Alex's session on the importance of role models. Interestingly, the stats from LGBT Great's report show quite clearly that the number of people who have role models on social media, and the media in general, is around double within the LGBTQ+ community (SM - 23%, M -37%) vs. outside of it (SM - 10%, M - 20%). And the numbers with no role models are over double outside of the LGBTQ+ community (19%) vs the LGBTQ+ Community (8%). An interesting suggestion that shows that those from more marginalised communities are more active in seeking role models, and more likely to need to find them outside of the people they see in person day-to-day. Alex also spoke strongly about what being a role model in the LGBTQ+ space means, and the part which is often over looked in describing what a role model is and how they can bring this by being themselves authentically and unequivocally. I would like to say a massive thank you to: Alexander & LGBT Great - and strongly recommend getting in contact with them and engaging in their work.
