According to statistics shared by CareQuest Institute for Oral Health, 68.5 million American adults do not have dental insurance, and more than 56 million Americans live in areas with a shortage of dental professionals. Sadly, we see individuals judged, often harshly, for their oral health status in day-to-day life. The image on this post is just one example, posted as a review of a restaurant. The waiter’s teeth should be irrelevant to one’s opinion of the meal. And, very possibly, the waiter would love to be able to receive a restoration but cannot for cost, distance, or other issues. I encourage this to be a reminder that, although oral health care is so important to overall health and wellness, it remains out of reach of too many individuals. It is our responsibility to change this reality, to make oral health care as important in the minds of the community as systemic health, and to make both oral and systemic health care accessible to our communities. As a simple call to action, share this post with your networks, and comment about what you are doing to increase access to care. Perhaps your action is a vote, membership in organized dentistry, or volunteer hours. Every small action matters. #accesstocare #barrierstocare #oralhealth #dentistry #confidence #calltoaction #inspire #healthcare American Dental Association

Primary healthcare services incorporating oral health screening and referrals, plus non-invasive preventive care and oral health promotion. This is one of the most important things we can do towards reducing #OralHealthInequity in Australia. It takes social and systemic change. Are we up for this challenge? Today, the Australian Healthcare & Hospitals Association (AHHA)'s Deeble Institute for Health Policy Research published an Issues Brief titled "Integrating Oral Health into Primary Healthcare for Improved Access to Oral Healthcare for Rural and Remote Populations." This brief explores the barriers to accessing oral healthcare for Australians in rural and remote areas and proposes a strategy to integrate oral health into primary healthcare. Co-authored by Dr. Prabhakar Veginadu as part of the 2024 Deeble Summer Scholarship program, the brief synthesises evidence on the challenges of access and factors influencing it. It identifies the uneven distribution of public dental services, a persistent shortage of public dental workforce, and high turnover rates among public dental professionals as key contributors to the access problem in rural and remote areas. Consequently, the brief recommends integrating oral health promotion, screening, and non-invasive preventive care into primary healthcare, as this is considered an effective solution for improving oral healthcare access, especially in resource-limited settings.
