Today we’re highlighting Lisa Chavarin, Schuff’s Director of Business Development and Preconstruction. Lisa has been in the steel industry for 6 years – all of those have been spent working for Schuff Steel. Her current role puts her at the forefront of pursuits for the Southern California construction market. Lisa’s day-to-day work encompasses facilitating the transition of projects from sales to project management, maintaining client relationships and supporting the Project Management department in working through any constraints that arise.     Lisa’s favorite part of her job is seeing the hard work come to life in the evolving landscape of a project. Being an integral part of the Snapdragon Stadium and Scripps Tower II projects, which ran concurrently, each had their own unique challenges, and have been the most impactful projects of her career. Lisa looks forward to coming to work each day because she never experiences the same day twice. She finds it motivating to work for a company that chases the most complex projects and doesn’t shy away from obstacles just because they are hard or haven’t been done before. For those just starting out in the industry, she has these words of encouragement: ‘Hard work and curiosity will take you further than you ever thought you could go. Never be afraid to ask questions.’    In her free time, Lisa enjoys sports of all kinds and when not working you can usually find her at one of her kids’ sporting events or watching a baseball game. Lisa, thanks for your hard work and dedication to being a part of the team at Schuff!

Recently Schuff Steel was invited by the American Institute of Steel Construction (AISC) to take part in their 2nd annual Design for Circularity sustainability workshop, hosted in Walter P Moore's downtown LA office.  As a member of the AISC's Sustainability Partner program, we were thrilled to send a couple of team members to represent the fabricator and erector’s point of view. With robust attendance from various well-respected members of the AEC community, the roundtable discussion’s aim was promoting ways to lower embodied carbon in new construction and reduce environmental impacts. #sustainability #steelconstruction

Great things happen when we put our minds together for a common goal! Last week, AISC hosted 18 AEC industry leaders at a collaborative sustainability workshop at Walter P Moore's Los Angeles office. They addressed a hypothetical project plan that minimizes lifecycle carbon emissions for a building, resulting in the least waste at the end of the building's life. Among the topics considered were the lateral system, gravity system, enclosure, foundations, and reuse of steel after future deconstruction. Workshops like this are critical for AISC to learn how to better support designers in their mission to lower the embodied carbon in their projects by using structural steel. Want to learn more about how steel is the only truly circular building material? Check out aisc.org/sustainability!

This past Saturday, Schuff team members walked in the March of Dimes March for Babies San Diego event in beautiful Balboa Park for the second year in a row. As a gold sponsor of the event, Schuff supports the March for Babies goal of uniting people across the country to advocate for the health of all moms and babies. The March of Dimes mission is to lead the fight for the health of all moms and babies and their goals are to end preventable, maternal health risks and deaths, end preventable preterm birth and infant death, and close the health equity gap. A special thanks to our own Lisa Chavarin for her efforts on the Executive Leadership Team.
