Achieving changes in the transportation system necessary to reach our goals will require fundamental transformations to our infrastructure, our technology, and our approaches to solving problems. Making our system safer and stronger, more resilient and sustainable, fairer and more equitable will require a renewed commitment to science, learning, and innovation.

  • Office of the Assistant Secretary for Research and Technology - The Office of the Assistant Secretary for Research and Technology (OST-R), works at the dynamic intersection of new and emerging technologies, transportation data, policy, research and all modes of transportation across the Department. Our mission is to facilitate the transformation of our transportation system–making it safer, more efficient, competitive, accessible and sustainable.
  • Transforming Transportation Advisory Committee - The Transforming Transportation Advisory Committee (TTAC) is being established to provide advice and recommendations to the Secretary about needs, objectives, plans, and approaches for transportation innovation.
  • DOT Strategic Plan - The Strategic Plan establishes the U.S. Department of Transportation’s strategic goals and objectives. This is a roadmap for transformative investments that will modernize our infrastructure to deliver safer, cleaner, and more equitable transportation systems.
  • Research, Development, and Technology (RD&T) 5-year Strategic Plan - The DOT RD&T Strategic Plan presents the Department’s research priorities for five years and describes the activities undertaken by the Department to address those priorities.
  • John A. Volpe National Transportation Systems Center (Volpe Center) - For more than 50 years, the U.S. DOT Volpe Center has been advancing transportation innovation for the public good. As the National Transportation Systems Center, our mission is to help the transportation community navigate its most challenging problems.
  • Federal Highway Administration's (FHWA's) Office of Research, Development, and Technology (RD&T) located at the Turner-Fairbank Highway Research Center (TFHRC) – A federally owned and operated national research facility that houses 15 laboratories, support facilities, and data sets; and conducts applied and exploratory advanced research in vehicle-highway interaction, and a host of other types of transportation research in safety, pavements, highway structures and bridges, human-centered systems, operations and intelligent transportation systems, and materials.
