For 30 years, IJ has come to the aid of real people fighting outrageous government abuse.
About us
Through strategic litigation, training, communication, activism and research, the Institute for Justice advances a rule of law under which individuals can control their destinies as free and responsible members of society. IJ litigates to secure economic liberty, educational choice, private property rights, freedom of speech and other vital individual liberties, and to restore constitutional limits on the power of government. In addition, IJ trains law students, lawyers and policy activists in the tactics of public interest litigation. Through these activities, IJ illustrates and extends the benefits of freedom to those whose full enjoyment of liberty is denied by government.

Seems like a great day to remember that the Institute for Justice's Unaccountable report found that nearly 1 in 5 #qualifiedimmunity appeals involved alleged #FirstAmendment violations—often premeditated #retaliation for disfavored speech or another protected activity. 🏆 VICTORY 🏆 In Gonzalez v. Trevino, the #SupremeCourt rules that government officials cannot arrest their political opponents without consequences. This decision opens the courthouse doors for those Americans who have been arrested for criticizing the government. Sylvia’s case began in 2019 after she was elected as the first Hispanic councilwoman in Castle Hills, Texas. Following her election, she led a citizens’ petition to remove the city manager for mistreating employees and neglecting basic city services. This act of political speech resulted in coordinated retaliation by city officials. Sylvia was arrested, booked, and thrown in jail. Now, the Supreme Court’s revision of its First Amendment retaliation doctrine ensures that Americans can seek justice when they have evidence of a retaliatory arrest. We are proud to have represented Sylvia in this crucial victory for free speech.

The #EleventhCircuit has had some very interesting opinions recently. That's how our Short Circuit Live recording at the Institute for Justice's annual Law Student Conference ended up being all about it--and #AI, and #qualifiedimmunity. In the latest episode, we discuss Judge Newsom's concurrence on whether large language models like ChatGPT may be useful in determining ordinary meaning. And we also discuss a very sad (content warning: it involves the loss of a pet) case where the court did something rare--denied qualified immunity on the "obvious clarity" exception to the clearly established law requirement. When every legal effort to stop someone from using their property has failed, can the government simply take the land using eminent domain? That is the question at the heart of IJ's new Supreme Court petition, filed by a family-owned hardware store business whose property was taken by a small Long Island town.

For over a century, the freedom to use property has been eroded through abusive zoning practices that emphasize top-down planning over property rights. Now IJ's #Zoning Justice Project aims to protect and promote the freedom to use property.

"Chance The Rapper's song, “Together,” is more than just a powerful tribute to the importance of home and neighborhood. It’s a powerful warning about the dangers of #EminentDomain, an extremely potent tool governments have used—and abused—for decades."

At the Institute for Justice, we litigate in the court of law and the court of public opinion. So, if you #lateral to IJ, you can keep writing briefs, motions, and the odd discovery letter. But you can also fight for your clients in media interviews (which awesome colleagues like Andrew Wimer can train you not to fear even if you, hypothetically, have a minor lisp and haven’t appeared on camera much before you came to IJ). I got to do just that last week for our clients in Brentwood, Missouri. And so could you (if you come to IJ)! https://lnkd.in/eVREacYy
