Favorite color? Black. Second favorite color? White? Third favorite color? Gray (any shade). I find color infuriating. It makes a minefield feel like an amusement park. But, I will concede, they're a big part of design systems-which means I'm professionally obligated to be competent in this subject. In our latest episode, Davy Fung and I discuss the wonderful world of color (or for those that prefer the fancy/illogical variation of the word, *colour*). We chat about our philosophy on the subject, the challenges and how to approach it within a design system. Listen here: https://lnkd.in/gbqpUeBA #designsystems #color #podcast

It's interesting to look back at my perception of management before ever being a manager. Boy, do I have a different point of view now that the tables have turned. Being a manager is to be in a perpetual state of feeling like you're letting your team down. Typically it's small stuff. Hopefully not-too-frequently it's big stuff. But it's a constant state of "I could have done more", or "I could have done that better" or "Man, I just absolutely screwed that up". It's humbling. Not in the silly use we often hear: "I'm humbled to have won this award", but in the actual Webster-dictionary-definition: "having or showing a modest estimate of one's value or importance". And yeah, I've put in enough years in this line of work to be overwhelmingly, hilariously humbled. I had a hard time taking myself seriously prior to becoming a manager. Now it seems downright silly to even consider it.

I don't know when or how it happened, but Config has become one of the major yearly conferences in our industry. Given how much Figma plays a role in the practice, it's common for design system teams to watch with anticipation/excitement/dread for what's coming. In our latest episode, Davy Fung and I discuss the reveals from Config and what that may mean for folks in the design systems practice moving forward. This video is well worth the watch. The first half hit hard because it hit close to home. Perhaps making things easier and faster without any pretense, contract or understanding of implications isn’t all it’s cracked up to be. I think about some of the most formative things in my life and they were/are a downright pain in the ass. And I mean that in the best way possible. Those pains in the ass made me better. I have to think on this one a bit more to have a cogent point of view. But it’s worth sharing. Watch here: https://lnkd.in/gRia7nSv

Product designers are busy people. They've got endless folks asking for endless things... endlessly. And then the design systems team is all up in their joint asking them to use components... It's not a surprise that people can get a little fatigued. It seems quite reasonable if you ask me. In our latest episode, Davy Fung and I discuss fatigue, its causes and ways to either avoid or blunt it. Listen here: https://lnkd.in/g7TZWiqv #design #designsystems #fatigue

LinkedIn, we've gotta do better about sexual harassment reporting. This man has been harassing me for weeks in my comments and DMs commenting on my body, and LinkedIn just told me that he's not going against their guidelines. There has to be a better response than just saying "delete it" or "block him". As a female in tech (and now a content creator who puts my life, image, and words out to millions every month), I've unfortunately become accustomed (and even desensitized) to hateful comments. But it's a whole other issue to report it and then to be told that you're wrong by the platform. When I talked to a member of the LinkedIn safety team about a year ago, I was told to report more comments like this to help them flag them and improve their systems. But what good does it do? Am I crazy to think that sexualizing and commenting on my body shouldn't be allowed, or am I asking for too much? You'd think that on a professional networking platform like LinkedIn, people would be on their best behavior with their employers watching, but some people just don't have any shame or respect for others. So I'm going to continue to raise awareness to these issues until they get fixed. Do better, LinkedIn.

I wanted to thank folks for the feedback on the interactive design system business case presentation. I got a lot of feedback from folks asking to describe how the calculations were made. I started off all fancy with a floating toggle button, but then I came to my senses and just added it underneath as a subtle caption. You can check the update here: https://lnkd.in/gCkwcg26 Hope this helps and thanks!
