🌺 A big thank you to the U.S. and Indonesian governments and our NGO partners for this fantastic outcome for some of the world’s most vital ecosystems.
Today, The Nature Conservancy joined key partners to announce a groundbreaking debt-for-nature swap as part of the United States of America’s Tropical Forest and Coral Reef Conservation Act (TFCCA). We joined the U.S., the Republic of Indonesia, as well as Conservation International, Yayasan Konservasi Alam Nusantara and Yayasan Konservasi Cakrawala Indonesia. The swap and coral reef conservation agreements will reduce Indonesia’s debt to the United States by $35 million over the next nine years and instead direct that money to supporting grants to protect and restore Indonesia’s coral reef ecosystems, including marine protected areas, improving natural resource management, and supporting the development of sustainable livelihoods for communities that rely on these ecosystems. Debt-for-nature swaps bring huge benefits to conservation: they help to ease the increasing debt crisis that is particularly affecting the developing world while addressing the biodiversity and climate crises in countries home to critical ecosystems and supporting local communities. This is a fantastic outcome for some of the world’s most important ecosystems. Our sincere appreciation to the U.S. Government, the Indonesian Government, and our NGO partners. I can’t wait to see how the next nine years progresses. Read more about the deal here: https://lnkd.in/gxSaXTgM
