California's Statutory Exemption for Restoration Projects (SERP) helps streamline the permitting process for restoration projects, reducing costs and delays. Extending SERP's sunset date to 2030 is a positive step in the right direction, but removing it entirely would further accelerate environmental restoration, aiding in the state's climate and conservation goals. TNC has played an active role in 5 of these 53 SERP projects, contributing to regionally significant salmonid recovery, critical coastal habitat restoration, public access for underserved communities, wetland restoration, greenhouse gas sequestration, and subsidence reduction. Safeguarding ocean resources and ensuring thriving ocean ecosystems benefits all of us—and is essential to the coastal communities that rely on nearshore fisheries for sustenance and coral reefs for coastal protection. Across the world, local communities are leading efforts to restore and protect these resources using traditional knowledge and practices refined through centuries of observation. Today, modern technology allows these communities to easily integrate and analyze local, indigenous and modern fishery data and management options to ensure the long-term health of these valuable resources. Introducing FishKit 🎣 🐟 FishKit is an easy-to-use, science-based decision-making app that puts local fishery data and management interventions at users’ fingertips. 🐟 FishKit promotes transparent decision-making and management interventions that have proven to work in small-scale fisheries. 🐟 Applying FishKit can help to ensure that harvest levels are sustainable, so fishery populations are able to replenish. Learn how local leaders and fishers are using FishKit to develop and implement sustainable fisheries management plans in Hawaiʻi and the Pacific, and how to use the free online app at: https://lnkd.in/eaiF9VPa. #fisheries #oceanmonth #FishPono

Forests across the Western U.S. are critical habitats for wildlife—from bobcats to bighorn sheep to an array of amazing plants. But these landscapes are facing a dangerous problem. After a century of fire suppression, coupled with climate change, many Western dry forests have become unhealthy and at risk for catastrophic megafires. TNC is using nature-based solutions like prescribed burns and strategic thinning to meet this urgent challenge. Learn more about our approach to improving forest health in the West at https://nature.ly/4br09Ej. 📸 Maxwell Moser, 📍Sierra Nevada

Seabirds are the most threatened bird group, with approximately 30% of the 360 seabird species at a heightened risk of extinction. A new database of global seabird restoration projects allows scientists to analyze trends and provides a tool for practitioners looking to effectively restore seabirds and coastal ecosystems.
