  • Last weekend, we had the pleasure of hosting Individual Abilities in Motion (I AM) for a tour of the Universal Access Trail at Hauser Nature Center. 🌿 Our Land Steward, Emily Tramontano, and summer intern Cole Christians guided the group through a nature experience, discussing TNC projects in the area and sharing insights about Pennsylvania’s natural beauty. Plus, everyone enjoyed some delicious fresh blueberries! 🫐 Thank you for joining us, I AM! 📸: Melisa Soysal/TNC #Pennsylvania #accessibility #nature

Today’s decision by the Supreme Court to overturn the Chevron doctrine will present challenges to preserving the many decades of progress we have made in protecting people and the planet. It will have major implications for implementing and enforcing laws related to such issues as air pollution, public lands management and endangered species protection. The decision impacts the ability of federal agencies to take the actions needed to successfully implement laws enacted by Congress. That is concerning, given the deep scientific expertise and practical experience they have in implementing and enforcing these laws, many which relate to complex and ambiguous issues. Read our full statement from Kameran Onley, TNC’s managing director of North American Policy and Government Relations:

  • 🦇 New Bat Box at Hauser Nature Center! 🌿 We’re thrilled to announce the installation of a brand-new bat box at the Hauser Nature Center in Long Pond! Thanks to the dedication of our land stewards, volunteers, and the Pennsylvania Game Commission, this bat box—located right off Cathy’s Trail—provides a cozy habitat for local bats. Did you know that bats play crucial roles in our ecosystem? They’re skilled insect hunters, helping control pesky mosquito populations and maintaining a healthy balance in our environment. 🦟 Next time you visit, keep an eye out for our winged neighbors! 🦇✨ 📸: Pat McElhenny/TNC

  • Land Steward, Elizabeth Hanson, recently joined forces with Lake, Regional Science Coordinator for the American Chestnut Foundation, at West Branch Forest to take tissue samples from trees growing in the chestnut orchard at the preserve. The chestnut orchard, a one-acre orchard housing American chestnuts, is a collaborative effort with the American Chestnut Foundation and works to help restore these iconic tree species to the area. 🌳🍂 📸: George Gress/TNC

  • Flowers are painting the landscape with vibrant hues and quietly supporting our precious ecosystems. 🌻🌸🌷 Our Director of Stewardship, Pat, recently stumbled upon a trio of captivating floral wonders: - Rhodora (Rhododendron canadense): These delicate pink flowers are blossoming all along Long Pond Barrens. This native shrub is one that we have been actively managing land for in hopes of seeing it thrive along the barrens. - Foamflower (Tiarella spp.): These produce unique frothy, white flower spikes. Foamflower attract pollinators and contribute to biodiversity. - Swamp Azalea (Rhododendron viscosum): Swamp azalea grace wetlands and stream banks with their fragrant, white or pale pink flowers and act as a beacon for bees and butterflies. 📸: Pat McElhenny/TNC

  • 🌿 Conservation Funding Assists Restoration at Pennsylvania Wildlife Refuge 🌿 Cherry Valley National Wildlife Refuge is a special place. This vast and mostly rural landscape is flanked by the Kittatinny Ridge, part of a 185-mile intact and forested wildlife superhighway. It’s renowned for attracting more than 20,000 hawks, eagles, and falcons each year during bird migration. TNC, along with many dedicated partners, is actively involved in protecting this vital ecosystem. Hear from our Director of Freshwater Conservation, Su Fanok, about the critical #conservation work taking place along this important landscape: https://nature.ly/3XivN3I 📸: Su Fanok/TNC

  • We extend our gratitude to Congresswoman Susan Wild for joining us in the field to explore the vital watershed properties within the 7th district! The Nature Conservancy (TNC) and the Bethlehem Authority recently collaborated with Congresswoman Wild to showcase the critical watershed properties surrounding the City of Bethlehem. These properties serve as a lifeline, providing clean drinking water to over 117,000 residents in Bethlehem and 10 other municipalities within Congresswoman Wild's district. The properties are safeguarded by a conservation easement held by TNC, which, through responsible forest management practices, including controlled burning, helps us ensure that these forests remain healthy, productive, and shielded from development. 📸: Michelle Giles/TNC #ConservationEfforts #WaterConservation #CommunityHealth
