How do we depend on a healthy ocean? 🌊 Although it may not feel like it during these hot summer days, the ocean helps us beat the heat in more ways than one. The sea is an essential ally against climate change and its effects. Since the Industrial Revolution, when humans rapidly began releasing greenhouse gases, the ocean has absorbed about 90% of the excess heat in our atmosphere. Without this vital function, Earth’s air temperature would be rising even more rapidly. 🌡️ Let’s appreciate our ocean and take action to protect it! 🌎 💙 #OceanConservation #ClimateChange © Akshay Kanade/TNC Photo Contest 2022

Exciting news! 🌿 TNC’s Berkshire Wildlife Linkage in Western Massachusetts has joined the the Center for Large Landscape Conservation's Staying Connected Initiative! The forests, wetlands and rivers of Western Massachusetts are an irreplaceable link in the Appalachian Mountain landscape that protects plants and animals. This initiative will double down on efforts to conserve and restore connected land and waterscapes in Northeastern North America to ensure a livable, healthy future for all. Learn more: https://lnkd.in/guDSW45W
The landscapes of northeastern North America span from the rolling Appalachians to the rocky Atlantic coast and are home to millions of people and countless species. Read our new blog post to learn how the US-Canada summit we co-hosted with Quebec-Labrador Foundation on behalf of the Staying Connected Initiative spurred increased collaboration for conserving and restoring ecological connectivity in this region. https://lnkd.in/guDSW45W

🐟🦈🐟 Just keep swimming, just keep swimming 🐟🐟 Happy Shark Awareness Day! If you’ve ever swam in the ocean, you’ve probably swam with a shark. Massachusetts is home to more than a dozen shark species, ranging from the small spiny dogfish to massive whale sharks. Just like us, and many other species around the world, climate change is affecting their habitat. Ocean waters are warming, sending these magnificent creatures on the move, heading farther north. 🌡️ 🌎 Visit the link in to learn how The Nature Conservancy is taking action against climate change: https://lnkd.in/e8URgW_B #SharkWeek #SharkAwarenessDay #ClimateChange © Justin Bruhn/TNC Photo Contest 2019

What do you know about #offshorewind? It can be difficult to get your head around this complicated topic, but we do know that it is a critical energy resource that will steer us away from our reliance on fossil fuels, which will help mitigate climate change. The Nature Conservancy in Massachusetts is partnering with Tricia Jedele and our colleagues along the Atlantic coast to host a monthly seven-part webinar series that will help answer some of the most challenging questions we have about offshore wind—questions about impact on our communities and species living near prospective sites, where and how sites are identified, cost, and more. Join us for the first episode on July 18, where we'll be joined by Sarah K. and Susan Muller to learn about recent analyses on why offshore wind is key for New England. I hope you can join us: https://lnkd.in/eWkM-zaw

Offshore wind is a complex topic that raises numerous questions. From its environmental impact to the economic feasibility, there’s much to explore. TNC invites you to join us for a seven-part series on offshore wind, where experts in the field will convene to provide insight into the complexities of this topic, from environmental impacts to economic considerations. Join us on Thursday, July 18, 12 p.m. ET, as we hear from Sarah Krame, Staff Attorney with Sierra Club Environmental Law Program, and Susan Muller, Senior Energy Analyst of Union of Concerned Scientists, to learn about the results of their recent analyses on why offshore wind is so important for New England, especially during the winter, and how it can reduce energy costs for New England ratepayers. Mayan ruins blend with contemporary villages and towns in 14 diverse ecological-regions, making Guatemala one of the most biodiverse countries in the world. Last winter, Liz Pearce, TNC in Massachusetts’ associate director of development, took part in a Latin America learning series which culminated in a trip to Guatemala. TNC in Guatemala is partnering with local communities to achieve our 2030 goals, focusing on agroforestry, water funds and indigenous-led protected areas. During the trip, Liz met with local partners, visited farms, and engaged with local forest-protecting communities. 🌿🌎 #Conservation #Guatemala

Check out this new and interactive short film produced by TNC's Baltimore Program in collaboration with Baltimore poet Kondwani Fidel and artist Saba Hamidi. 🌳🏙 The film is part of a larger effort in Baltimore that aims to increase support for urban and community forestry through art and design. Comment below one word that reflects your experience in nature! ⬇️ The Nature Conservancy in Maryland and DC #UrbanForestry #CityGreenscapes
In collaboration with Baltimore poet Kondwani Fidel and artist Saba Hamidi, TNC's Baltimore Program has produced a new animated short film 'To The Jungles That Be', which highlights how people experience nature differently depending on where they grow up and whether they have access to healthy natural environments. 🌳🏙 The film, directed by Dave Cooper, is being used to start conversations in urban and underserved communities to better understand their relationship to nature and their interest in participating in Maryland’s Tree Solutions Now Act, which aims to plant 5 million trees in the state by 2031 with 500,000 in urban and underserved communities. The film can be viewed on www.tothejungles.com, where users are also invited share their stories and experiences of nature. Learn more about the project on our website: https://lnkd.in/eHVyQvPH Special thanks to our other collaborators on the project: Bronson Hoover with dnbstudios, Noisy Tenants® #urbanforestry #citygreenspaces #conservationthroughart #ToTheJunglesThatBe
