For more than 40 years, TNC has been protecting the breathtaking beauty that makes the Caribbean the unique paradise that it is and the resources that sustain the millions who live there.

My team has been busy this week, prepping and training new staff for our next coral spawning event, happening in a couple days. Staff were walked through the process of assisted fertilization, rinsing, cleaning and caring for larvae during their fragile early stages. We have set up multiple experiments to examine the best ways to settle and raise recruits, and have been refining a "large-batch" method of fertilization in order to scale up facilitated sexual reproduction for our restoration program. #coralbabies #coralrestoration #worldreefawarenessday

It’s #WorldReefDay! Coral reefs are a haven for marine life, but experts estimate that up to 90% of coral reefs will be severely degraded by 2050 if we don't act now. Islands tend to suffer disproportionally large losses of biological diversity compared to other areas, so establishing protected areas is a key tool for mitigating species losses. A recent study was published on how to better identify key locations within the Tropical Important Plant Areas in the #BritishVirginIslands to better inform the expansion of the current protected area network. We are especially proud that Dr. Steve Schill, as part of TNC Caribbean, provided technical support in the spatial prioritization of identifying key locations for endemic plant species for this research. This study was done in collaboration with Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, National Parks Trust of the Virgin Islands, and Københavns Universitet - University of Copenhagen https://lnkd.in/eftKhZq8

Coral conservation practitioners and local reef-dependent businesses have long been pitted against one another, assuming that the goals of each of these groups cannot be unified. But TNC Caribbean's approach to #CoralConservation is unique in terms of finding ways to support local livelihoods and ocean conservation through #SustainableFinancing. The #BahamaReefs project leads on the development of innovative financial solutions that not only fund ocean conservation, but also support reef-positive businesses that contribute to coral reef resilience and local communities. This shift in approach to coral conservation is a unique and impactful strategy in The Bahamas. Recently our Bahamas team led their second annual coral reef workshop, inviting local and international stakeholders to participate in plenaries on - Innovative Financing Principles - Mass Bleaching Interventions - Stony Coral Tissue Loss Interventions - Communications Initiatives - Metrics Targets and Evaluation And most importantly developing a working plan for continued collaboration in 2024. The corals in our systems have been growing like crazy, lately, including Acroporid species that have been previously difficult for us to maintain ex situ. This is a milestone for our work, opening opportunities for gene banking and propagating these ESA threatened species. Being able to maintain them in a controlled environment is especially critical now, in light of recent and projected marine heatwaves, giving us the ability to protect precious genetic material through stress events. #coralrestoration #coralconservation
