What are some companies where culturally, product management is a strong advocate for and collaborator with product design?

Today I find myself with the space and freedom to look forward with excitement and curiosity about what might come next in my personal and career journey. My former employer recently announced a requirement for many of us to relocate 1,300 miles away. I resigned, a difficult decision but one that immediately feels like a gift, despite already missing my team. As a result, I find myself in the fortunate position to take the summer to connect with my family and consult with limited clients part-time, including a stealth company in the AI space. I’m also actively interviewing for full time roles while enjoying the benefit of time to find a mission, culture and team that feels like a company I could call home for a while. Here are some of the values I want to take forward into my next opportunity: • AI for good. I’ve spent the better part of a year on AI and spending my free time now learning, coding, designing to keep up with the breakneck speed of AI innovation. I am spending 100% of my time now deeply learning the tech and its potential while learning how to apply it with social responsibility and integrity. • Lead through example and design. I’ve always designed and been hands-on, even in leadership roles. I confidently work in Figma, prototype, and create visual stories that inspire teams. Instead of just telling people what to do, I strive to lead by example without micromanaging.  • Scale teams responsibly. I believe great teams don’t always have to be huge teams. Identifying unique talent, cultivating strengths, nurturing safe spaces has led to the teams I’ve built finding they are able to do more with less without feeling overworked. • Reinforce positive cultures. Design should be a joyful act. People — myself included — do their best work when they’re happy. I’m excited to share that I’m starting a new role as Design Director of Merchandising at Walmart. I’ll be supporting a team of designers and managers on a transformational effort to unite, simplify and evolve best-in-class Enterprise products for the world’s biggest retailer. Our team’s portfolio is responsible for a business that brings in over half a trillion dollars in revenue a year. Our work is about how to get the most affordable, high quality products to hundreds of millions of consumers a week, quickly and easily. We aspire to work with a diverse set of roles across Walmart on how we might modernize processes for determining what products to sell, where, when and how they’re made available to customers, and ensuring they’re “on the shelves” where and when our customers need them, whether in brick-and-mortal retail, in the rapidly growing online space, or a combination of the two. On a personal level, what excited me about this role: • The design team. I’ve been nothing short of impressed by Valerie Casey and the Design leadership at the company. It’s clear that design has a seat at the table with direct influence over impactful business decisions. • Being on the hook to drive business goals. As a serial entrepreneur, I get energized by roles where design is not only a strategic influence but accountable for and directly impacts the success of a (massive) business. • AI and new technologies. The Walmart team is doing so much incredible work on this front: how we can leverage AI, machine learning, image recognition and other novel tech to drive major impact on the business and give users better tools to make more strategic decisions, quickly. • Unlocking the value of my diverse career choices. I’ve worked in agencies, startups, “FAANG+” (ex. Meta, Google, Uber, Microsoft). Each has taught me separate lessons that seem to snap well together for this role. My agency work taught me how to engage with expert partners and plan design efforts in the face of ambiguity. My startup experience taught me how to be scrappy and focused, and feel a sense of ownership for the success of a business and product, not just performance reviews. And working in Big Tech helped me understand how to navigate complex orgs, build alignment, and collaborate at scale. The broader design team at Walmart is growing.
