PFAS, ubiquitous in our environment, presents a challenge of controlling and eliminating at the source due to its use across various industries. However, strides are being made towards mitigating its presence. The study by KEEN discusses the company's efforts to eliminate PFAS from their shoe-making process. Through rigorous testing and collaboration with suppliers, KEEN Footwear was able to eliminate over 150 tons of PFAS from their manufacturing processes. The case study Heartland Water Technology’s LM-HT Concentrator Provides ZLD Treatment of FGD Purge Water Using Flue gas as Thermal Energy Source details a demonstration project by Heartland, in partnership with The Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI). The project evaluated the Heartland LM-HT® Concentrator's capability to treat Flue Gas Desulfurization (#FGD) purge water to Zero Liquid Discharge (#ZLD) using flue gas as the thermal energy source. In April, the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) published their Steam Electric Power Effluent Limit Guidelines (ELGs) Final Rule for FGD wastewater. The rule focuses on zero liquid discharge (ZLD) for coal-fired powerplant Flue Gas Desulfurization (FGD) wastewater. Heartland utilizes a suite of on-site treatment technologies to reach regulatory standards and site Zero Liquid Discharge (#ZLD) targets. Flue gas desulfurization (#FGD) purge water is a byproduct of the process used to remove sulfur dioxide from exhaust flue gases in coal fired power plants, containing various contaminants including heavy metals and salts. Treating this #wastewater is necessary to meet environmental regulations and prevent pollution of water bodies. Heartland is proud to announce the partnership with Empire Green Generation (a wholly-owned subsidiary of Empire Diversified Energy) to develop a state-of-the-art facility that will convert food waste into renewable hydrogen and carbon as part of the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Appalachian Regional Clean Hydrogen Hub (#ARCH2). The project incorporates several essential technical steps into a cohesive, unified process. First, food waste is treated in an anaerobic digester, producing biogas and residual solid material (digestate). Heartland’s proprietary HelioStorm™ ultra-high temperature ionic gasifier performs methane pyrolysis of the biogas to produce clean hydrogen and valuable sustainable carbon. The digestate is processed through Heartland's proprietary LTC Dry™ and HelioStorm™ gasifiers in a parallel pathway to produce an ultra-pure, tar-free synthesis gas. This gas is then used to generate clean energy, powering the entire conversion system described, and reducing reliance on the grid and fossil fuels.
